Kalamkari Silk Sarees

The Mughals who patronized this craft in the Coromandel and Golconda province called the practitioners of this craft “qualamkars“, from which the term “kalamkari” evolved.[1]The two main regions where pen Kalamkari sarees are made in Andhra Pradesh are Machalipatnam and Srikalahasti. Only natural dyes are used in kalamkari and it involves seventeen steps Dyes for the cloth are obtained by extracting colors from various roots, leaves, and mineral salts of iron, tin, copper, and alum. Various effects are obtained by using cow dung, seeds, plants and crushed flowers to obtain natural dye.

  • The designs are inspired by nature like the trees, flowers, leaves, animals and birds, and the epics of Ramanaya and Mahabharata.

The Kalamkari silk sarees and kalamkari cotton sarees are unique and colorful and are a popular choice among women of all ages.
